Hello, I'm Trish Hatch, Ph.D. For years, I have provided leadership, training and consultation for school counselors and administrators in an effort to assist them in improving their school counseling programs.

In 2003, I co-authored the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs (ASCA, 2003). In collaboration with other experts in the field, we designed a model that has sold over 20,000 copies and is now used to train new master’s level school counselors as well as revitalize current professionals in the field.

This seminal document was necessary because while others in education have shifted to standards based education and begun to measure the results of their programs, school counselors have not had a professionally endorsed mechanism to do the same. The ASCA National Model is an organizational system school counselors can use as a framework to design, develop, implement, evaluate and improve their programs.

As an integral part of the total educational program for student success, school counselors must demonstrate how their program connects to standards and uses data to:

1) effect and promote student and systems change

2) identify targeted areas of need

3) implement intentional guidance (or closing the gap) activities to address areas of need

4) measure the results of their programs

5) provide equity and access to a rigorous education for every student

6) share their successes

7) improve their programs and services
